I grew up in Asia as a child: in Thailand and then the Philippines in 1972. Due to the Vietnam war we were unable to visit Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam at the time but as an adult have visited several times. I have been to 108 countries and know Southeast Asia very well, including running scuba diving trips in the 80's: I set up at least 60 and ran 35 myself.
I have spoken to many women in Thailand who were either traveling alone or in pairs. They felt safer in Thailand than they did at home.
